RIDDOR Guidance

Accident Reporting

What is a RIDDOR?

If you are an employer, self-employed or in control of work premises, you are required under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013) to report some work-related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences to the Incident Contact Centre (ICC).

Reporting accidents and ill health at work is a legal requirement. The information enables the Health and safety Executive and local authorities to identify where and how risks arise and to investigate serious accidents...

What needs to be reported?

In brief, you must report all of the following;

1.  A death or major/specified injury  - This should be notified without delay and within 10 days. You must follow this up with a completed accident report form (F2508). Major injuries may include fractures, amputations, loss of sight or unconsciousness due to electric shock.

2.  A member of the public taken straight to hospital  - This should be done following an injury on site, must be notified to the enforcing authority via the ICC without delay.

3.  An over seven day injury - That is when an employee or self-employed person has an accident at work and is unable to work for over seven days, (but does not have a major injury). You must report it to the enforcing authority via the ICC within ten days.

4.  A work related disease -If a doctor notifies you that your employee suffers from a reportable work-related disease you must send a completed disease report form to the ICC.

5.  A dangerous occurrence  - This is when something happens that does not result in a reportable injury, but which clearly could have done. Examples include explosions, an overturning fork lift truck or electrical overload causing fire. This must be reported immediately (e.g. by telephone) and should be followed up within ten days by a completed accident report form (F2508).

NB: Please consult your consultant if you are unsure about whether to report an accident.
